Our Philosophy

Why we built KilasOS — and why it matters.

Principle 1

Your Hardware. Your Data. Your Rules.

We believe the computer in your home or office should answer to you and no one else. KilasOS runs entirely on your hardware. It does not phone home. It does not collect telemetry. It does not require an account. It does not need the internet to function. Every setting, every file, every byte of data stays on your drives — where it belongs.

"The cloud is just someone else's computer." KilasOS keeps the computer in your hands.
Principle 2

Transparency is Non-Negotiable

Every line of KilasOS source code is public on GitHub under GPL-3.0. There are no hidden features, no backdoors, no proprietary extensions, no "open core" bait-and-switch. The Pro tier unlocks additional features — but those features are also open source, in the same repository. You pay for the work, not for access to the code. You can audit it, fork it, modify it, and redistribute it. That's not a marketing promise — it's a license guarantee.

Principle 3

Simplicity is a Feature

KilasOS is a single Go binary — not a sprawling microservice cluster, not a Docker-in-Docker nesting doll, not a Python virtualenv with 200 dependencies. One file. One process. Systemd starts it; you manage it through the WebUI. This isn't dogma — it's practical reliability. Fewer moving parts means fewer things that break at 2 AM. We're building an operating system for a NAS, not a distributed systems PhD thesis.

Principle 4

Edge-First. Not Cloud-Dependent.

The dominant model in consumer tech is: ship a low-power device, phone home constantly, rent the features back to the user as a subscription. We reject that model. KilasOS is built to run on the edge — your home, your office, your lab — with or without an internet connection. Cloud integration (backups, tunnels, remote access) is available, but always optional. The core experience degrades gracefully to zero connectivity.

Principle 5

Pay Once. Own Forever.

KilasOS Home is free, forever — full ZFS management, SMB/NFS shares, 34 Docker apps, security tooling. Pro is a one-time purchase. Perpetual license. No subscription tiers, no seat licenses, no "premium support" upsells. We charge for the value we've already built, not for the privilege of continuing to use it. If you bought it, you own it.
